The Oshkosh Area School District Board of Education established the
Oakwood
Environmental
Education
Charter
School
in June of
2003. The charter
school was established to utilize the 26 acre Sheldon Nature Area
ecosystem located directly behind
Oakwood
Elementary School as an environmental education
laboratory
.
The
Sheldon Nature Area committee has developed the nature center into
an environmental education learning center through dedicated
community volunteers over the past twelve years. The committee chairperson,
John Walsh, has been the catalyst that transformed the site into a
beautiful living environmental educational laboratory. The vision of becoming an
Environmental
Education
Charter
School
, utilizing partnership with the
University
of
Wisconsin
Oshkosh
and Sheldon Nature Area was initiated by Dr.
Steve Maassen, an
Oakwood
Elementary
School
parent. Dr. Maassen has had a
passion for improving student’s education by utilizing the
Environment as the integrating content for all curriculum
areas.
